Elective Delivery Infant Safety Program An elective delivery means that the doctor and patient schedule a date for the baby to be born. Deliveries scheduled before 39 completed weeks of pregnancy, can be harmful to a mother and her baby. It increases the risk of premature birth, for example: Babies born before 39 completed weeks of pregnancy may have medical problems that need extra medical care. This means they may need to spend more time in the hospital or in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

This program recognizes facilities that have safety guidelines to prevent these deliveries. They also must have quality improvement programs.

To be recognized, a facility must complete an Aetna Infant Safety Program survey. The survey asks about the facility's policies, programs and outcomes to prevent early elective deliveries. Aetna developed the program along with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the March of Dimes, and the Leapfrog Group.
